Winter Salting

Motto of the Month
Introduction

Well, winter draws on, even though we have only just moved into autumn, the season of mellow fruitfulness.
All highways maintenance organisations will be finalising their preparations for the coming winter.
Salting routes will be being mulled over, gritters will be getting a final check of their mechanicals and their spread rate, and maybe a few new machines will be replacing those having seen better days. Stocks of salt should have been replenished by now (and sampled and tested for grading and moisture content) while the lower summer prices prevailed, hopefully into salt-barns.
All we need now is the winter, but I am still going to keep my fingers crossed it stays mild

Winter Salting
A good start to finding out about road salting is by accessing the page, Road Salt for Winter Maintenance in this guide.
It is worth noting that "wet" salting systems are being adopted by some organisations as it is suggested they have faster deicing potential, and use reduced amounts of salt and therefore are more environmentally friendly.
However it is suggested these systems are more complex to manage and machinery maintenance is more frequent and costly. I do not know if these are reasoned comments so perhaps you should check it out yourself.

Motto of the Month

"Flattery is like perfume, it is nice, but smell it, do not swallow it."
