Idiots' Guide to Highways Maintenance |
VIRUS / SPAM
WARNING
Every effort has been made to ensure that this website does not directly or
indirectly propagate viruses or spam, and I would regard the actual
website as fundamentally secure because it is looked after by my web host service provider.
However such is the expertise of those that would use independent websites, such
as mine, as a means of propagating viruses and spam, I expect all users to
secure their own PC's against attack by the use of appropriate software, that
is kept up to date.
I have all possible protection on my machine including, anti virus protection,
firewall, tracker removal, email washer, and they are all obtainable on the web
for free (with donations to some if you feel like it) so you do not have to be
unprotected, only lazy.
The more likely and dangerous means of receiving virus infections and spam is through
your email.
I have become aware that somehow, I do not understand these things, emails are
being sent to people, that I have never heard of, not even in my address
book, with my email address on them,
appearing to have been sent by me.
I have not sent these emails.
What I do understand is,
*
My email address is not widely displayed on this website, only on pages where I
think it appropriate, and only in an image (safe) format.
*
I do not seek or encourage emails unless it is to point out some error (e.g.
dead links to other websites) on this website.
*
I reply to very few emails, and only those that have a clear unambiguous
description to some topic included in the website.
*
I do not send any unsolicited emails to individuals.
*
I may infrequently send an email to a company or organisation for information,
but it will have a clear and precise description in the header.
*
It is unlikely that my website is being deliberately targeted, but it is
possible to bring the website into disrepute.
However it is more likely to be the result of the general situation created by those who are attacking the internet
generally, attempting to bring it to a grinding halt
by just generating huge amounts of bogus email.
It is very, very unlikely you
have received an email from me, so if it appears you do have an email from me
just delete it without opening it, unless you are expecting one, and you are
very, very confident in the protection you have installed on you PC.
Spam is less "dangerous" than virus propagation, is mostly annoying and time consuming, and often
insulting.
If you have not tried an email washer yet, try one, you are able to view you
emails while they are still with your ISP, and delete (and even bounce) those
you do not wish to receive before downloading those that remain.
COOKIES WARNING
I personally have not placed any cookies on
this website, and in principle you do not have to accept cookies to access my
website.
However I do use the free service Google Analytics to obtain analytical
information on the viewing characteristics of the pages on my website, therefore
it is necessary to place a piece of Google tracking "code" on my web pages.
I place further Google "code" on my pages to allow the advertising boxes to be
present.
The presence of Google "code" on my web pages allows Google to place cookies on
my website to track browsing information, this cookie information is solely for
Google, what they do with it I have no idea.
There are browsers, "Firefox"
is one, where you can block the access of cookies in your browsing if the
browser is set up correctly.
It is not a condition of access to the website "The Idiots' Guide to Highways
Maintenance" that you accept cookies, as it is with many websites, and if you
set up cookie blocking on your browser you will still be able to access my
website, and you will know if you have successfully blocked the cookies because
you will not see the Google advertising, and you will get a little warning to
tell you that cookies have been blocked.
But be aware that if you set your browser up in this manner there will be many
websites that you will not be able to access, because it is now a requirement to
accept cookies before you will be able to access the website.
